The archi­tec­tur­al object is locat­ed in the Repub­lic, but pre­vi­ous­ly it belonged to the Prin­ci­pal­i­ty of Lithua­nia and Poland. Restora­tion work takes place here almost con­stant­ly these days, but it does not stop numer­ous tourists from admir­ing the beau­ty of the struc­ture.

There are always heat­ed debates among his­to­ri­ans about the dates when its con­struc­tion began, because the dif­fer­ence between the data is sev­er­al hun­dred years. The most plau­si­ble ver­sion is con­sid­ered to be that the struc­ture was erect­ed 600 years ago and its con­struc­tion last­ed 200 years.

Why did con­struc­tion work take so long? The fact is that the area here is swampy. To pre­vent the walls and parts of the foun­da­tion from falling into the ground, it was nec­es­sary to expand the sand dune. At that time it was an extreme­ly dif­fi­cult task. The builders per­formed all the work man­u­al­ly using a sin­gle type of “equip­ment”: horse-drawn carts.

There are also ver­sions that con­victs took part in the con­struc­tion, but the infor­ma­tion voiced by local his­to­ri­ans has not yet been doc­u­ment­ed. The his­to­ry of the defen­sive com­plex, it must be said, is very gloomy. It is full of wars, mur­ders, intrigues, betray­als. And yet the build­ing attracts trav­el­ers and those who like to tick­le their nerves like a mag­net. The local ghost (every­one should take this into account in advance) is quite aggres­sive here.

The ghost of a pret­ty girl with a dog appears near the fortress walls and great­ly fright­ens late tourists in the evenings. They lit­er­al­ly run away because they know: those whom they saw in her arms usu­al­ly do not live long and die from the same cause (frac­tures received in a strange fall).
