Description:
The history of Hellbrunn Castle, located six kilometers south of Salzburg, dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, when Prince Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, who received the reins of government of the country, wanted to build a residence in the Italian style. He was a passionate admirer of Italian culture, which is why he chose this style to decorate his country palace. To this day, this magnificent palace is an excellent example of Renaissance architecture with the pomp and luxury characteristic of this period.
The location for the construction of the princely residence was chosen in one of the most picturesque places – at the foot of Mount Hellbrunn. This is a fertile place where everything literally smells fragrant, and the soil is saturated with moisture by numerous springs and springs. Here, in the dense greenery of the park, the world famous Fun Fountains are hidden. Streams of water appear in different places, sometimes unexpectedly, leading visitors to indescribable delight. This entertainment has no analogues in the world, and for almost four centuries the Fun Fountains have delighted numerous guests of the palace. In Hellbrunn Palace there is a unique theater driven by a stream of water, a water organ sounds, and picturesque grottoes delight the eye.
Throughout its history, the palace was practically not used as an official residence, because the luxury and originality of its entertainment was conducive to festive events and festivities. Since the 18th century, the park’s alleys have been decorated with statues of mythical heroes and ancient gods, and the stone theater is still the oldest open stage venue in Europe.
