Description:
The Holy Monastery “Saints Peter and Paul — Cârtisoara” is located 6 kilometers south of Cârtisoara commune, Sibiu county, in a hidden clearing at the foot of the Făgăraş Mountains, near the Transfăgărășan road (DN7C). The place is a sheltered one where the summers are short and the winters long, cold and wet. The place of worship was re-established in 1990 on the site of a hermitage of monks, which was erected by order of the Lord of the Walloon Region, Mircea the Elder around the 1400s. This was to be an outpost of resistance against the expansion of Catholicism. The monastery is now a monastic foundation, built with much pain, from scratch by its inhabitants but also with the help of modest and merciful benefactors.
