The Holy Monastery “Saints Peter and Paul — Câr­ti­soara” is locat­ed 6 kilo­me­ters south of Câr­ti­soara com­mune, Sibiu coun­ty, in a hid­den clear­ing at the foot of the Făgăraş Moun­tains, near the Trans­făgărășan road (DN7C). The place is a shel­tered one where the sum­mers are short and the win­ters long, cold and wet. The place of wor­ship was re-estab­lished in 1990 on the site of a her­mitage of monks, which was erect­ed by order of the Lord of the Wal­loon Region, Mircea the Elder around the 1400s. This was to be an out­post of resis­tance against the expan­sion of Catholi­cism. The monastery is now a monas­tic foun­da­tion, built with much pain, from scratch by its inhab­i­tants but also with the help of mod­est and mer­ci­ful bene­fac­tors.
