The ini­tia­tor of the con­struc­tion of the funic­u­lar was Khrushchev, who planned to make the cap­i­tal of Pri­morye a “Russ­ian San Fran­cis­co”. Niki­ta Sergee­vich put for­ward this idea back in 1954. How­ev­er, in 1959, return­ing from a trip to the Unit­ed States, he arrived in Vladi­vos­tok and dis­cov­ered that con­struc­tion had not begun. That’s when the work began to boil. The Vladi­vos­tok funic­u­lar was launched in May 1962 and is still in oper­a­tion today. This is the only funic­u­lar in Rus­sia that serves as pub­lic trans­port. The length of the tracks is 183 m, the height dif­fer­ence is 66.5 m.
