Enor­mous catch­ment basins belong­ing to the ancient water sup­ply sys­tem of Jerusalem. They could be called the King Solomon Pools, since King Solomon did not build them and had noth­ing to do with them. The name was giv­en to them by Chris­t­ian pil­grims in recent cen­turies. The com­plex con­sists of three basins. The upper basin with built walls has a rec­tan­gu­lar shape. The oth­er two basins were formed by block­ing the wadi with dams and are trape­zoidal in shape. The total capac­i­ty of all three basins is 280,000 cubic meters. The basins were filled from two con­duits car­ry­ing water from springs locat­ed sev­er­al dozen kilo­me­ters to the south. The water flowed by grav­i­ty, the con­duits were inclined. In addi­tion, water from near­by springs was also sup­plied to the basins. Two con­duits (“upper” and “low­er”) sup­plied water from the basins to Jerusalem. Anoth­er con­duit went to Herodi­um.
