Why Top:
This is a unique settlement inside an active volcano’s crater, surrounded by vineyards and lava fields
Description:
At an altitude of around 1700 meters lies a small community living in the harsh conditions of a volcanic caldera. Grapes are cultivated here and wine is produced using mineral-rich soil. After destructive eruptions in 1995 and 2014, part of the village was rebuilt, preserving its secluded and powerful natural atmosphere.
Facts:
Cape Verde’s winemaking tradition began here; in 2014, an eruption destroyed 75% of buildings; in 1870, Count Montrond arrived with grapevines and founded local production.
Significance:
Regional and national value, protected as part of Fogo Natural Park.
