
Facts and history
Buratino is a character created by Alexei Tolstoy in 1936, based on the Italian tale of Pinocchio. In 1975, the Mosfilm studio produced the musical film “The Adventures of Buratino,” which became a classic of Soviet children’s cinema. Filming took place in Crimea, and many of the locations can still be visited today.
The movie was filmed during 1974–1975 and premiered in March 1976. It featured famous actors such as Dmitry Iosifov (Buratino), Rolan Bykov (Karabas-Barabas), and Rina Zelyonaya (Turtle Tortilla).
List of tourist locations
– Chersonesus Taurica, Sevastopol, Russia – an ancient Greek city-state founded over 2000 years ago. This was the filming site for the famous “Field of Wonders,” where Buratino went seeking fortune. Today it is a museum-reserve with ruins of ancient buildings, an amphitheater, and sea views.
– Baydarsky Gate, Crimea, Russia – a picturesque mountain pass with a panorama of the Baydar Valley and the Black Sea. This is where the scene was filmed in which Alice the Fox and Basilio the Cat tell Buratino about the Land of Fools.
– Ai-Petri, Crimea, Russia – one of the most famous mountains in Crimea, 1234 meters high. The film used views from the plateau and rocky peaks. Today, visitors can reach it by cable car from Miskhor.
– Yalta, Crimea, Russia – a resort city where street scenes and crowd episodes were filmed. Tourists can stroll along the promenade and imagine the film’s characters walking there.
– Koreiz, Crimea, Russia – a settlement at the foot of Ai-Petri where some outdoor filming took place.
Tourist tips
– The best time to visit is from May to October, when the weather is warm and sunny.
– Allow at least 2–3 hours for Chersonesus to explore the museum and coastline.
– Bring warm clothes to Ai-Petri even in summer – it’s cool at the top.
– Baydarsky Gate is best visited as part of a tour of the southern coast of Crimea.
– In Yalta, you can find themed tours of Soviet film locations.
