The Fort Union Trad­ing Post in North Dako­ta was estab­lished in 1828 by John Jacob Astor’s Amer­i­can Fur Com­pa­ny. This was not a gov­ern­ment or mil­i­tary post but a busi­ness estab­lished for trad­ing with the north­ern plains tribes.
