Why Top:
The first tomb of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
Description:
Napoleon died on May 5, 1821, at Longwood House and was buried in Tomb Valley at his request. In 1840, his ashes were exhumed and ceremoniously transported to France, where they now rest at the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. The tomb on St. Helena is now empty, but the site remains as a memorial. It forms part of the French holdings on the island (along with Longwood House and The Briars) and is a popular destination for tourists and historians.
