The Monastery of San Loren­zo de El Esco­r­i­al of the Hieronymite Order is the largest mon­u­ment of Span­ish archi­tec­ture of the 16th cen­tu­ry, then nick­named the “eighth won­der of the world”. It is locat­ed in the foothills of the Sier­ra de Guadar­ra­ma, 45 km north­west of Madrid. Esco­r­i­al was built in 1563–1584 by order of Philip II in hon­or of the vic­to­ry over the French in the Bat­tle of Saint-Quentin (1557). This is a com­plex archi­tec­tur­al com­plex with a sys­tem of court­yards, inscribed in a rec­tan­gu­lar plan (208 × 162 m). The plan of Esco­r­i­al resem­bles a lat­tice — an attribute of the mar­tyr­dom of St. Lawrence. The palace-monastery of Esco­r­i­al is includ­ed in the World Her­itage List.
