The main attrac­tion of Karabu­dakhkent is the source of drink­ing spring water “Bekenez”. It is the sec­ond largest source of water in Europe. 30% of the res­i­dents of the Karabu­dakhkent region and part­ly of Kaspiysk receive water from here. Trans­lat­ed from the Tur­kic lan­guage, “Bekenez” means “ring” because of the sur­round­ing moun­tain­ous land­scape. Accord­ing to the sto­ries of the old res­i­dents of the region, the cur­rent in the spring was so strong that if an ox fell into the water, it was thrown ashore like a chip. In 1938, a build­ing was built around the spring, which still stands today. “Bekenez” is prac­ti­cal­ly a strate­gic object, and strangers are not allowed here, but tourists can make an excep­tion. It is believed that the spring belongs to the Meso­zoic era and its geo­log­i­cal age is about 70–60 mil­lion years. The aver­age vol­ume of water out­put is 40,000 tons per day. The tem­per­a­ture of the water in the source is kept at a con­stant lev­el — about 15.2 degrees.
