Kun­gurskaya Cave is one of the ten longest gyp­sum caves in the world. The cave has dozens of lakes, grot­toes and impres­sive high shafts, which are called organ pipes. In the tourist part, sta­lac­tites and sta­lag­mites are illu­mi­nat­ed. One of the largest karst caves in the Euro­pean part of Rus­sia is more than 8 km long and up to 27 m deep. In the Kun­gurskaya Cave there are 70 lakes, 58 amaz­ing­ly beau­ti­ful grot­toes and 146 high shafts, which are called “organ pipes”. The first plan of the under­ground pas­sages was drawn up at the begin­ning of the 18th cen­tu­ry by the famous geo­g­ra­ph­er and car­tog­ra­ph­er Semy­on Reme­zov, who was sent to the Kun­gur dis­trict by Tsar Peter I. About 1.3 km of the cave is equipped for one and a half hour excur­sions. In the cave you can see sta­lac­tites and sta­lag­mites aged 10–12 thou­sand years. The sur­face of the halls and columns is cov­ered with lay­ers of ice and frost. There are man-made ice sculp­tures in the grot­toes. Frozen crys­tals shim­mer in dif­fer­ent shades in the back­light and cre­ate a unique fairy-tale atmos­phere.
