The name is trans­lat­ed from the local dialect as “Camel Well”, since shep­herds found shel­ter in it along with their live­stock, includ­ing camels. But since 2002, after the vis­it of French archae­ol­o­gists, the caves have not been used in this way. But they are not pro­tect­ed prop­er­ly. Numer­ous rock paint­ings have been found in the caves depict­ing shep­herds and cows, giraffes, and also, pre­sum­ably, dogs (and maybe wolves, it has not been estab­lished exact­ly). Inter­est­ing­ly, the cows are dressed in some kind of cer­e­mo­ni­al attire, i.e. the ancient inhab­i­tants of Soma­lia wor­shiped, most like­ly wor­shiped them. The rock paint­ings date back to the Neolith­ic peri­od.
Excur­sions to Las Gil are not orga­nized, this is a pri­vate mat­ter for every tourist. But to vis­it it is nec­es­sary to request per­mis­sion from the Min­istry of Tourism of Soma­lia (of course, it is paid).
