The name is translated from the local dialect as “Camel Well”, since shepherds found shelter in it along with their livestock, including camels. But since 2002, after the visit of French archaeologists, the caves have not been used in this way. But they are not protected properly. Numerous rock paintings have been found in the caves depicting shepherds and cows, giraffes, and also, presumably, dogs (and maybe wolves, it has not been established exactly). Interestingly, the cows are dressed in some kind of ceremonial attire, i.e. the ancient inhabitants of Somalia worshiped, most likely worshiped them. The rock paintings date back to the Neolithic period.
Excursions to Las Gil are not organized, this is a private matter for every tourist. But to visit it is necessary to request permission from the Ministry of Tourism of Somalia (of course, it is paid).
