French physi­cian, botanist and biol­o­gist Jean Emmanuel Gilib­ert arrived in Grod­no in the 1770s. and the first thing he did was arrange a botan­i­cal gar­den in the city, on the site of which Gilib­ert Park is now locat­ed. In the park there are the already men­tioned the­ater and a stone lya­mus, not far from which is the build­ing of a med­ical school (20 Eliza Ozheshko St.), for­mer­ly a med­ical acad­e­my. This was anoth­er nov­el­ty of Gorod­nit­sa, for which Zhiliber came to Grod­no. The Acad­e­my exist­ed for only five years, from 1776 to 1781, after which it moved to Vil­nius, where it became the med­ical fac­ul­ty of the uni­ver­si­ty, and Gilib­ert him­self soon returned to France. The con­struc­tion of the build­ing was com­plet­ed in 1786, when there was no longer any Acad­e­my in Grod­no, and for a long time the palace of the princes Svy­atopolk-Chetvert­in­sky was locat­ed here, and in Sovi­et times the mil­i­tary commandant’s office was locat­ed.
