Before the rev­o­lu­tion, a huge mil­i­tary town was built in Achin­sk — per­haps the largest com­plex of its kind in Rus­sia, com­pa­ra­ble only to the Karos­ta dis­trict in Lat­vian Liepa­ja. These are large blocks of attrac­tive two-sto­ry brick-style hous­es, some of which are used for ordi­nary hous­ing, while oth­ers still belong to the mil­i­tary school. There are no restric­tions on the ter­ri­to­ry of the town, you can walk freely (if you find a road), but look under your feet — the roads are bad­ly bro­ken, and in some places there are pieces of con­crete and rein­force­ment stick­ing out of the ground. The path to the town is not entire­ly obvi­ous. It’s best to turn off Sverdlov Street in the area of the Lon­don Pub cafe, and you’ll fig­ure out the rest.
