The caves have a long sys­tem of labyrinthine pas­sages — over 11.7 km. They owe their name to the near­by vil­lage of Vorontsov­ka. Although the caves have been known for over a hun­dred years, large-scale research began only in the mid-20th cen­tu­ry. Tourists are led under­ground along a safe, illu­mi­nat­ed route, which can be eas­i­ly walked at a leisure­ly pace in 40 min­utes. The nature near the caves is very pic­turesque. At alti­tudes of 400–700 m above sea lev­el, beech­es, oaks, chest­nuts, black­ber­ries, rose hips, Cau­casian cher­ry lau­rel and relict box­wood grow on the moun­tain slopes. Three inter­con­nect­ed caves (Kabanya, Vorontsovskaya and Labir­in­to­vaya) with a total length of 11 km and an alti­tude dif­fer­ence of 240 meters. This is one of the largest cave sys­tems in the Cau­ca­sus. The caves were named in hon­or of the tsar’s viceroy in 1905–1915. I. I. Vorontso­­va-Dashko­­va. Already on the approach to the caves the area is very beau­ti­ful — beech forests, rocky out­crops, panoram­ic views of the moun­tains. Entrance to the caves is only with a guid­ed tour. You can vis­it three of the six halls, each of them is huge.
