The hydro­elec­tric pow­er sta­tion was built in the ear­ly 1950s to pro­vide elec­tric­i­ty to St. Peters­burg. It is locat­ed on the north­ern tip of the island, on the very bor­der, and there­fore is a dou­bly sen­si­tive facil­i­ty, com­plete­ly closed to out­side access. The best views of the hydro­elec­tric pow­er sta­tion open from the Eston­ian coast or from the walls of the Ivan­gorod fortress. How­ev­er, you won’t see any­thing spe­cial: the archi­tec­ture of the Nar­va Hydro­elec­tric Pow­er Sta­tion is very sim­i­lar to the Vol­ga pow­er plants of the pre-war and ear­ly post-war con­struc­tion. It is most inter­est­ing to observe the hydro­elec­tric pow­er sta­tion dur­ing the flood peri­od, when the stream rush­es direct­ly through the spill­way, rais­es foam and cre­ates seething in the entire low­er reach­es of the Nar­va.
