Description:
Located atop Byrsa Hill among the ruins of ancient Carthage, the cathedral was built in honor of French King Louis IX, who died here during the Eighth Crusade. Its architecture blends Byzantine and Moorish styles, with a Latin cross layout, towers and domes on the façade, and interiors adorned with stained glass and arabesque stucco. Since 1993, it has been known as the “Acropolium of Carthage” and hosts cultural events.
Facts:
Construction was initiated by Hussein II Bey. The cathedral was consecrated by Cardinal Lavigerie. The bell weighs about 6 tons. Since 1956, Louis IX’s relics were moved to Paris.
