Kronotsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve is one of the oldest nature reserves in Russia. It was established as a state reserve in 1934 on the site of the Sobolinoy Nature Reserve that existed since 1882. The Kronotsky State Nature Reserve is located in the eastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula and covers an area of 1,147,619.37 hectares, including 135,000 hectares (1,350 km²) of the adjacent three-mile Pacific Ocean.
