Forest Elephants May Return to Nyungwe National Park
More than twenty years after vanishing due to poaching, forest elephants may be reintroduced to Nyungwe National Park. The Rwandan government and African Parks are leading a feasibility study focused on ecological restoration, human-wildlife coexistence, and logistical concerns. A central goal is controlling invasive vine grasses, which elephants once naturally managed. Conservationists also propose restoring buffalo (last seen in 1974) and possibly relocating mountain gorillas from Volcanoes National Park to strengthen ecosystem diversity.
