Description:

En Ру

The stone castle was founded in 1315 by order of Komtur Johannes von Winnungen. The consecration took place in 1325 on the day of Saints Peter and Paul. The complex was located on a hill fortified with a retaining stone wall. In the middle of the 15th century, during the Thirteen Years’ War of the Teutonic Order with Poland, the castle buildings were partially destroyed. In the 19th century, the ruins were sold to Baron von Romberg. In 1872, his son Max von Romberg demolished all the medieval buildings of the forburg, and in their place he built a residential building. After World War II, the residential building was demolished, and the former carriage house was adapted for a veterinary clinic. In the early first half of the 90s of the last century, the castle was leased by an Armenian family, who attempted to rebuild it into a hotel, but without success. Cultural heritage site of regional significance. What remains: a neo-Gothic gate with a fragment of a wall, ruins of the western wing, a carriage house, stables, a grotto.
