North­ern Trans­baikalia, bor­der of the Patom and Stanovoy uplands. The high­est ridges bor­der­ing the Stanovoye High­land from the north are Severo-Muysky and Kodarsky, with ele­va­tions up to 3072 meters above sea lev­el. Here, on the right bank of Vitim, in the area of Lake Oron, the Vitim Nature Reserve was orga­nized on May 20, 1982. The area of the reserve is 585,838 hectares. It is locat­ed in the south­east of the Bodaib­in­sky dis­trict of the Irkut­sk region, where it bor­ders the Repub­lic of Bury­a­tia and the Trans-Baikal Ter­ri­to­ry. Remote from trans­port routes, pro­tect­ed by high moun­tain ranges in the south and the impass­able Vitim rapids, this site was pre­served in a rel­a­tive­ly pris­tine form dur­ing the peri­od of rapid indus­tri­al devel­op­ment of the region and today rep­re­sents the stan­dard of nature of North­ern Trans­baikalia. Spe­cial­ly pro­tect­ed nat­ur­al objects of the reserve are Lake Oron, the Kodar Glac­i­er Region, bighorn sheep, black-capped mar­mot, and Bar­guzin sable.
