A nat­ur­al sink­hole. It is locat­ed in a field used for agri­cul­ture. The depth of the sink­hole is approx­i­mate­ly 30 meters, although there are reports of descents of up to 500 meters, where researchers encoun­tered a lack of oxy­gen. The place is not fenced off, and approach­ing the edge is dan­ger­ous, as the soil may col­lapse. The sink­hole became famous after a case when locals saved a girl who was thrown into the hole — this sto­ry gave rise to many rumors. In lit­er­a­ture, the sink­hole also appears under the name “Khupten Pit”, asso­ci­at­ed with dis­ap­pear­ances of peo­ple and oth­er gloomy sto­ries. The sink­hole was formed as a result of karst process­es, when under­ground waters dis­solve lime­stone rocks, form­ing voids that can col­lapse over time.
