The penultimate of those built in Russia (the last one was built 10 years later in Tobolsk) and the smallest Kremlin in the country – its size is only 100×200 m. It was built after the great fire of 1700, which destroyed the wooden fort that had stood on this site before. The Kremlin is located on a natural elevation, on a cliff above the river. Today it is only a fortified house of the governor. Only a few fragments remain of the stone wall that once encircled the territory of the Kremlin. However, a new replica can be seen nearby – attempts to restore the historical wall (in the unpainted red-brick form, the new pieces of the wall look like a model or someone’s country estate). In the 19th century, the administrative buildings on the territory of the Kremlin were demolished, and in their place, buildings in the spirit of classicism and eclecticism were built that fit well into the style of the complex: the building of the zemstvo and district courts (1802), the building of government offices (1825), the fire station (1880s) and the treasury building (1914).
