It was established to protect the undisturbed northern taiga Okhotsk mountain landscapes, as well as coastal ecosystems on the northern coast of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The maximum height is 1500 m. It includes 4 remote, hard-to-reach areas that differ in relief, climate, flora and fauna. The area of ​​the reserve is 8838 km². There are many small rivers, lakes and swamps in the reserve. More than half of the territory is covered by forests. The main forest-forming species is Dahurian larch.
