Of the main embankments of St. Petersburg, the Admiralty Embankment is the shortest, its length is only 414 meters, and there are only 8 houses on it.

The Admiralty Embankment is located in the very heart of the Northern capital, runs along the left bank of the Bolshaya Neva River, starts from the intersection of Dvortsovy Proezd with Dvortsovaya Embankment and Dvortsovy Bridge, in the west it runs into the English Embankment, and the Admiralty Embankment ends at Senate Square with the Bronze Horseman.

The most iconic and remarkable sights are nearby. It offers a beautiful view of the Neva River, the St. Petersburg bridges, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the University Embankment with its sphinxes, the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, as well as the very core of the city — the Peter and Paul Fortress.

The Admiralty Embankment is one of the latest, youngest, embankments, which appeared in the city in the 1870s, while all the ceremonial embankments appeared in St. Petersburg in the 18th century.

Beginning with the founding of St. Petersburg in 1703 and the construction of the Admiralty in 1704, this section of the bank of the Bolshaya Neva was used as an outlet to the river for the Admiralty shipyard. These were the “river gates” through which materials and raw materials were delivered, and ships built here were removed from the slipways.
