Just as silk was transported from Asia to the Mediterranean along the Silk Road, so amber was delivered along the Amber Road. It began in Palmnicken and ended in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia, a distance of 1,067 miles. Memorial boulders were erected in various places, and one of the first was the Amber Stone in the village of the same name. On it, in Latin, are written “Palmnicken” and “Aquileia”, and the number of miles between them is also carved.
