Bosra, once the cap­i­tal of the Roman province of Ara­bia, was an impor­tant stopover on the ancient car­a­van route to Mec­ca. A mag­nif­i­cent 2nd-cen­­tu­ry Roman the­atre, ear­ly Chris­t­ian ruins and sev­er­al mosques are found with­in its great walls.
