Description:
The fortress appeared before the Portuguese occupation. The fortification was built in the traditional style for Islamic citadels – with cylindrical towers at each corner, with a small moat around the perimeter, filled with water from wells specially drilled for this purpose.
During its existence, the fortress was repeatedly used for its intended purpose – to control the sea approaches to Muharraq – and therefore by the 20th century it had significantly “worn out”. In the 1980s, a large-scale restoration of the fort was carried out, while it was a matter of principle not to use materials that could not have been used during construction in the 15th century.
Thanks to the work done, today the Arad fort looks like new, attracting tourists. It is especially magnificent after dark, when the masterfully made illumination is turned on.
