Description:
Despite the name, this is not primarily a war museum it is a general museum and one of the best in New Zealand. It stands in an imposing position in Auckland Domain. It includes excellent displays of MA?ori and other Polynesian peoples’ arts and crafts and daily MA?ori cultural performances (ground floor) as well as geography of the Auckland region. The top floor records names in stone as well as sobering tombs and lists of war events and their locations. It also has a planetarium and a cafe. The museum was constructed in the 1920s as a memorial to those who fought and died in wars. The cenotaph located in the grounds below the museum entrance is the focal point for annual ANZAC Day remembrance services.
