Why Top:
A 260 m stretch of unpaved Road No. 8 lined by 20–25 towering Grandidier’s baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri), up to 30 m tall and 800 years old. One of western Madagascar’s top natural attractions.
Description:
What Madagascar’s scenic Avenue of Baobabs lacks in quantity (comprising only about 25 trees total), it makes up for in quality, as the small grouping of Adansonia grandidieri is a striking reminder of the island country’s forest heritage. Lining a dirt road in western Madagascar, the oddly blobby baobabs can live to be thousands of years old and are known locally as renala, meaning “mother of the forest.” They reach up to 100 feet tall.
Facts:
– Main grove: 260 m long; ~25 additional baobabs in surrounding 4 ha
– Tree height: up to 30 m (98 ft)
– Age: up to 800 years
– Species: Adansonia grandidieri, endemic to Madagascar
– Temporary protection since July 2007; declared a natural monument July 2015
Significance:
Regional; emblem of Menabe and Madagascar’s first designated natural monument.
