Description:
A dormant volcano. Another name for the volcano is Barba (Spanish: Barba). It reaches a height of 2906 meters. The area is 1500 km². On one of the peaks of the volcano, a caldera formed, filled with water and forming a maar. The diameter of the lake is about 300 meters, the depth is 8 m. The soils around the lake consist of lapilli. Barva is a complex volcano, the slopes of which have volcanic faults formed as a result of the release of volcanic gases. The volcano began to form about 320,000 years ago, throwing out flows of andesite and dacitic volcanic lava. At the moment, 4 main pyroclastic cones have formed at a distance of 2-3 km and more than a dozen subsidiary ones. The most recent solidified lava flow formed on the southern slope of the volcano and reaches the city of Heredia. The last significant volcanic activity occurred in the modern period in the form of a Plinian eruption. Eruptions were reported in 1760, 1766, 1776, 1867. However, they have not been confirmed by recent volcanologists studying the volcanic material. In addition, this is shown by the dense vegetation around the volcano. Thermal springs are located near the volcano. The volcano is part of the Braulio Carrillo Park.
The volcano is the subject of Indian myths. According to one legend, at the time of the formation of the lake, a huge snake appeared in one of the volcano’s cones, which swallowed all the children from the nearby village.
