Lake Baunt is located in the Bauntovsky district (Buryatia). Lake Baunt honorably ranks third in the Republic of Buryatia in terms of water surface size; the area of the lake is 111 km². This lake is second in area only to Baikal and Gusinoye. Located in the Baunt Basin, surrounded on the northern side by the peaks of the South Muya Range, and on the southern side by the high and mighty Big Hapton Mountains.
