Why Top:

It’s one of Sardinia’s most stunning natural wonders, offering a rare glimpse into ancient geology and a serene, otherworldly atmosphere.

Description:

Formed in limestone, this karst system comprises three branches, of which the southern one is outfitted for visitors with about 900 meters of illuminated galleries. Inside are stunning stalactites, stalagmites, several freshwater lakes, and Neolithic petroglyphs of the Ozieri culture. Annual guided tours on metal walkways allow safe exploration of water-filled chambers and sandy “beaches” of subterranean rivers. Limited access and no land route preserve its secluded, pristine atmosphere.

Facts:

First scientific exploration took place in 1952.
The southern branch has been open to tourists since the mid-1950s.
Over 70 km of passages have been surveyed, with 900 m accessible to visitors.
Petroglyphs (4000–3500 BC) and freshwater lakes were discovered here.
Named after the monk seal that inhabited it until the 1970s.

Significance:

Regional; part of the Codula di Luna karst system and protected within the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu Park.
