Less­er vis­it­ed com­pared to many oth­er places in Cuba, Cam­aguey can be puz­zling for those who choose to vis­it. While it’s some­what less touristy com­pared to Havana or Trinidad, Cuba’s third-largest city (locat­ed exact­ly at the cen­ter of the island) is actu­al­ly packed with touts — local­ly known as jineteros — who will hard­ly leave a trav­el­er alone.

That should not detract you from its beau­ty — in fact, the his­toric cen­ter of Cam­aguey is a UNESCO World Her­itage Site. This was built in a med­i­na style to keep pirates at bay. It means get­ting lost in Cam­aguey is almost a giv­en; but on the oth­er hand this will allow you to dis­cov­er its many cor­ners and hid­den gems.
