Description:
Up to 300 different species of birds nest here, among which the most famous are terns, herons and bitterns. Moreover, Lake Vaccares is the only place in Europe where the famous pink flamingos live in natural conditions — amazingly beautiful creatures.
The total area of the Camargue Park itself is 857 square kilometers, of which 343 are in the marine territory. The maximum height above sea level reaches 4 meters. In total, 7,500 people live in this area. They are mainly engaged in fishing and agricultural work — growing rice and raising livestock, and this area is also famous for its volumes of salt production. In addition, at the moment, more and more tourists visit this picturesque and interesting place, and therefore many locals are involved in this area of activity. It is known that more than 80 thousand tourists come to Lake Vaccares every year. And recently, in the building of the former sheepfold near the bridge, the Camargue Museum was founded, where objects of everyday life of its typical inhabitant of the 19th century are presented, as well as the history of the formation of the Rhone River delta.
The lake has been under state protection since 1927, and since 1997, it, like the Camargue Park, has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
