Built around 1679 this medieval fortress was a very strate­gic place. Used as an impor­tant mil­i­tary post by the Dutch it played an impor­tant role in the con­flicts between the Dutch colonists and the British Invaders. Even in the lat­er his­to­ry of Cape Town, the fort has been of great sig­nif­i­cance. It has also been used as a prison.
It is now a mil­i­tary muse­um and an impor­tant venue for activ­i­ties of the mil­i­tary in Cape Town. The excit­ing part of vis­it­ing this muse­um is the can­non ball fir­ing that takes place peri­od­i­cal­ly. The cer­e­monies are also quite inter­est­ing from the point of view of the tourist. His­to­ry lovers will enjoy the place immense­ly. One of the most beau­ti­ful his­toric sites of Cape Town.
