Its grounds cover 13.5 hectares (33 acres) and house nearly 2,000 specimens of about 280 species, mostly in Victorian-style caging. The zoo specializes in hoofed stock and hippopotamuses. It had a pair of giant pandas and is one of the few zoos outside China to have successfully bred the animals.
