This pow­er facil­i­ty was built dur­ing the Sovi­et era as one of the largest nuclear pow­er projects. It includ­ed four oper­at­ing RBMK-1000 reac­tors and two unfin­ished ones. On the night of April 26, 1986, an acci­dent occurred at Unit 4 dur­ing a test, result­ing in an explo­sion and destruc­tion of the reac­tor. A mas­sive amount of radioac­tive mate­r­i­al was released into the atmos­phere, prompt­ing the evac­u­a­tion of tens of thou­sands of peo­ple and the cre­ation of an exclu­sion zone. The acci­dent had a colos­sal impact on the glob­al ener­gy, envi­ron­men­tal, and polit­i­cal land­scape, prompt­ing a rethink­ing of approach­es to nuclear pow­er plant safe­ty. Fol­low­ing the dis­as­ter, the remain­ing units con­tin­ued to oper­ate for sev­er­al more years but were grad­u­al­ly shut down: Unit 2 in 1991, Unit 1 in 1996, and Unit 3 in 2000. Today, the facil­i­ty is in the process of being decom­mis­sioned, and a new shel­ter, known as the Arch or New Safe Con­fine­ment, has been erect­ed over the destroyed Unit 4. The sta­tion’s grounds and the adja­cent exclu­sion zone have become a site for sci­en­tif­ic research, memo­r­i­al events, and tourist excur­sions. Despite its trag­ic his­to­ry, the site attracts atten­tion as a sym­bol of human error and a reminder of the need for a respon­si­ble approach to tech­nol­o­gy.
