Атомная электростанция, место крупнейшей техногенной катастрофы XX века.
Описание:
This power facility was built during the Soviet era as one of the largest nuclear power projects. It included four operating RBMK-1000 reactors and two unfinished ones. On the night of April 26, 1986, an accident occurred at Unit 4 during a test, resulting in an explosion and destruction of the reactor. A massive amount of radioactive material was released into the atmosphere, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and the creation of an exclusion zone. The accident had a colossal impact on the global energy, environmental, and political landscape, prompting a rethinking of approaches to nuclear power plant safety. Following the disaster, the remaining units continued to operate for several more years but were gradually shut down: Unit 2 in 1991, Unit 1 in 1996, and Unit 3 in 2000. Today, the facility is in the process of being decommissioned, and a new shelter, known as the Arch or New Safe Confinement, has been erected over the destroyed Unit 4. The station’s grounds and the adjacent exclusion zone have become a site for scientific research, memorial events, and tourist excursions. Despite its tragic history, the site attracts attention as a symbol of human error and a reminder of the need for a responsible approach to technology.
