Description:
A narrow road winds through the Dargava Gorge, past rocks and forests, which leads wanderers to the “City of the Dead” – a medieval necropolis of 97 crypts. The history of the mass grave dates back to the bloody wars between the Alans and the Tatar-Mongols. In those days, the land was so expensive that the locals could not afford to bury the dead in the meadows suitable for sowing and grazing. Then they chose a rocky slope, where crypts gradually began to be built. Because of the wars, there were so many dead that the small cemetery grew into a whole necropolis – the “City of the Dead”.
Через Даргавское ущелье, мимо скал и лесов вьётся узкая дорога, которая приводит странников в «Город мёртвых» — средневековый некрополь из 97 склепов. История массового захоронения ведёт своё начало с кровопролитных войн между аланами и татаро-монголами. В те времена земли стоили так дорого, что местные жители не могли позволить себе хоронить умерших на пригодных для посева и выпаса скота лугах. Тогда они выбрали скалистый склон, где постепенно начали строиться склепы. Из-за войн погибших было так много, что маленькое кладбище разрослось до целого некрополя — «Города мёртвых».
