Description:
This is the name of the trail through the Dragon Mountains, which is 220 km long. It is considered a real test of courage and endurance and takes 6 to 12 days. According to official statistics, 55 people died here until 1985. Later, the counting stopped, but deaths on the route happen every year. The Drakensberg Grand Traverse runs through Natal National Park. It has many variations, but there are eight checkpoints along its entire length. The route starts at the Sentinel parking lot and ends at the Bushman’s Neck border post. The hiker has to keep moving steadily up sloping terrain, climbing an average of 1,000 m per day. The ordeal begins in the very first meters, when a traveler with a heavy backpack has to climb two nearly vertical ladders made of thin chains to reach the crest of the ridge. And it will be the first of 30 ridges to be traversed along the way. Those who have successfully completed the route say that the mind-blowing views and the feeling of total communion with nature were worth all the effort.
