Description:
The Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial of the Hieronymite Order is the largest monument of Spanish architecture of the 16th century, then nicknamed the “eighth wonder of the world”. It is located in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, 45 km northwest of Madrid. Escorial was built in 1563-1584 by order of Philip II in honor of the victory over the French in the Battle of Saint-Quentin (1557). This is a complex architectural complex with a system of courtyards, inscribed in a rectangular plan (208 × 162 m). The plan of Escorial resembles a lattice – an attribute of the martyrdom of St. Lawrence. The palace-monastery of Escorial is included in the World Heritage List.
