It may seem strange to place a ceme­tery on a list of tourist attrac­tions, but For­est Lawn is more than just a bur­ial ground. Locat­ed imme­di­ate­ly south of Delaware Park, For­est Lawn was found­ed in 1849 as a rur­al-style ceme­tery on what was then the out­skirts of town, and serves today as an arbore­tum, nature pre­serve, and cel­e­bra­tion of Buf­falo’s rich his­to­ry. Sun­days in the Ceme­tery tours are offered sea­son­al­ly, con­duct­ed var­i­ous­ly on foot (sen­si­ble shoes are rec­om­mend­ed) and on trol­leys, each of these themed excur­sions explores a dif­fer­ent aspect of local his­to­ry through an explo­ration of the lives of indi­vid­u­als buried at For­est Lawn. Famous peo­ple who have been laid to rest here include Pres­i­dent Mil­lard Fill­more, Prince Kyril Scherba­tow of Impe­r­i­al Rus­sia, Con­gress­woman Shirley Chisholm, avi­a­tion pio­neer Lawrence Bell, Seneca Indi­an chief Red Jack­et, singer Rick James, and many may­ors and oth­er promi­nent cit­i­zens of Buf­fa­lo. Deer, birds and oth­er native wildlife are com­mon­ly seen strolling these 269 acres (108 ha) of impec­ca­bly land­scaped green­ery, and archi­tec­ture buffs will love the mau­soleums and memo­ri­als designed by such Buf­fa­lo archi­tec­ture lumi­nar­ies as Richard Waite and George Cary, and espe­cial­ly the Blue Sky Mau­soleum, com­plet­ed in 2004 from a design by Frank Lloyd Wright.
