Тоннель, пробитый в горной породе.
Description:
Gunibsky tunnel or Tsarsky, as it is called by the locals. Year built: 1866–1867 Length 103m, height 6m, width 4m. The tunnel was built (cut by hand) for strategic and communication purposes by the forces of Russian soldiers and local residents. In the autumn of 1871, Emperor Alexander 2 first arrived in Dagestan as the head of the Russian state. After visiting Port-Petrovsk and Temirkhan-Shura, the emperor arrived in Gunib. Carefully prepared for the arrival of the emperor. Roads were laid in the mountains, bridges were thrown across the rivers, and a tunnel was cut right in the rock near Gunib. The tunnel is cut under one of the peaks of the Gunib plateau, called Kaligeg, and allows the shortest way to go through Mount Gunib from the Kara-Koysu valley to the Avar Koysu valley and further to Khunzakh. It was built primarily for security reasons — as an emergency exit from Gunib. In addition, there was a superstition: it was unsuitable for royal persons to pass twice along the same road.
