The cen­tral square in the heart of Seoul with a 600-year his­to­ry, pre­sent­ed to res­i­dents and vis­i­tors of the city in a new qual­i­ty — this is a square space sur­round­ed by archi­tec­tur­al mon­u­ments such as Gyeong­bok­gung Palace. In addi­tion, the square offers an extra­or­di­nary view of Bukhansan Moun­tain, and the recre­at­ed his­tor­i­cal appear­ance of Sejong­no Road makes the square an impor­tant cul­tur­al and his­tor­i­cal land­mark. The length of Sejong­no Street, stretch­ing from Gwangh­wa­mun Gate to the square by the Cheong­gyecheon Stream, is 550 m, and the width is 34 m. Gwangh­wa­mun Square is called the square “recre­at­ing the his­to­ry of Gwangh­wa­mun Gate”, “reviv­ing the ancient appear­ance of the streets near the roy­al palace”, “the main square of Korea” and “the cen­ter of cul­tur­al recre­ation for city res­i­dents”. Gwangh­wa­mun Square recre­ates the orig­i­nal appear­ance of the square in front of Gwangh­wa­mun Gate, and the new­ly erect­ed stat­ue of King Sejong, under whose lead­er­ship the Kore­an alpha­bet was cre­at­ed, is sur­round­ed by foun­tains that dis­play the let­ters of the Kore­an alpha­bet. Between the stat­ues of Admi­ral Yi Sun-sin and King Sejong is a spe­cial city square where var­i­ous exhi­bi­tions and events are held in which all vis­i­tors to the square can par­tic­i­pate. Sejong-no Street leads from the foun­tains and a small pond in front of the Yi Sun-sin stat­ue to the begin­ning of Cheong­gyecheon Stream. Gwangh­wa­mun Square, togeth­er with Sejong-no Street, which has ten lanes of vehic­u­lar traf­fic, is the cen­tral city square for large events, and its width includ­ing pedes­tri­an areas reach­es 100 meters. Gwangh­wa­mun Square has sev­er­al sub­way exits from var­i­ous sta­tions and sev­er­al pedes­tri­an cross­ings, mak­ing it acces­si­ble to vis­i­tors. Total area: 19,000 sq.m.
