The largest island on the Dnipro River, cradle of the Zaporizhian Sich and a unique nature reserve with scenic forests and rocky cliffs. A must-visit for Cossack heritage and pristine landscapes.
Описание:
Formed after the last Ice Age, the island stretches some 12 km long and up to 2.5 km wide. It features relic oak groves, sandy beaches, granite cliffs and multiple archaeological sites dating from the 6th to 17th centuries. From the 16th century it hosted the Zaporizhian Sich fortress. Today it’s a National Historical and Cultural Reserve with reconstructed Cossack huts and garrisons, an ethnographic museum and annual festivals. Most of the island is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails, protected from development and logging.
