Description:
Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park at 15,000 km², and a favorite safari destination for many experienced bush lovers. Game-viewing can be extremely rewarding, especially during the dry winter months from May to October. The park does feature the Big Five (although rhino are seldom seen) and very large herds of buffalo and elephants. In fact Hwange hosts the second largest elephant population in Africa (Chobe in Botswana takes first prize). Lions are frequently seen, and visitors also enjoy regular sightings of cheetah, wild dog, roan and sable antelope. Night drives can be very rewarding, with good sightings of aardvark, aardwolf and pangolin. Habitats include Kalahari scrub, teak and mopane woodlands, granite hills and salt pans – resulting in over 400 species of birds. There is very little natural water available in the park, so there is a wide network of man-made boreholes spread throughout – many of which are maintained by lodges. There is also an airstrip and a good road network. Accommodation ranges from luxury lodges to government camps, which offer self-catering chalets and camping while on safari in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. Hwange is a short and easy drive from Victoria Falls. It’s less busy and arguably offers more diversity than the more popular Chobe River area.
