Built at the Admi­ral­ty plant in Leningrad in 1956–1959. More than 500 enter­pris­es and insti­tu­tions of the USSR took part in its cre­ation. Com­mis­sioned on Decem­ber 3, 1959. Over the next 30 years, it pro­vid­ed nav­i­ga­tion on the North­ern Sea Route and served as a “nuclear uni­ver­si­ty”, where expe­ri­ence in year-round Arc­tic nav­i­ga­tion was gained, tech­nolo­gies were improved and per­son­nel were trained for the nuclear fleet of our coun­try. He nav­i­gat­ed thou­sands of ships in the Arc­tic ice, and him­self trav­eled 654,400 nau­ti­cal miles, which is more than three times the dis­tance from the Earth to the Moon. Decom­mis­sioned in 1989. On May 5, 2009, the nuclear ice­break­er “Lenin” moored in the cen­ter of Mur­man­sk at the sea ter­mi­nal, quick­ly becom­ing the “call­ing card” of the Mur­man­sk region and one of the most vis­it­ed tourist sites in the Kola North. The mod­ern Arc­tic Exhi­bi­tion Cen­ter “Nuclear Ice­break­er “Lenin” is a struc­tur­al divi­sion of the Fed­er­al State Uni­tary Enter­prise of the Nuclear Fleet (FSUE “Atom­flot”) of the State Atom­ic Ener­gy Cor­po­ra­tion “Rosatom” (GC “Rosatom”).
