Description:
The tract Kanga or Kanga-baba, in the past was an important point on the main caravan route from the Mangyshlak piers to Khorezm and Khiva. It attracted the attention of many travelers and explorers. The complex of monuments is located in a picturesque area convenient for an ancient settlement – on the southern slopes of a plateau, gradually turning into a wide valley. Most of the complex (central and eastern) is occupied by archaic Turkmen monuments – these are mainly rough stelae, most often paired; tombstones of the koitas type; boxes-sarcophagi with tombstones on them; occasionally – fences made of slabs dug on edge with tombstones inside them; as well as steles with recessed lamps (shyraks). There are rare types of monuments in the necropolis. These, first of all, include a sculptural-stylized tombstone of the kokartas type with a relief image of horns, a ram’s backbone, but retaining the general compositional scheme of an ordinary stylized koitas. Another rather original type of archaic monuments on Kanga Baba are shyrak steles, installed together with traditional rough steles (leaning against them). The western part of the necropolis (approximately 1/3 of its area) is occupied by Kazakh monuments dating back to the 18th. 20th century
