The initiator of the construction was Savva Mamontov. William Walcot developed the initial project on his order. The Metropol building plays an exceptionally important role in shaping the appearance of Theatre Square and Revolution Square. The hotel is the largest public building of the Art Nouveau era and is recognized as one of the most significant Moscow historical and architectural monuments of this style.
